History in Houston

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/5451617.html

For years Houston has the reputation of demolishing the old to bring in the new. Of course some places needed to be razed and remodeled. However, for a city to be truly "world class" (in my humble opinion) it has to preserve some of its past. Walk into Barnes & Noble and go to the travel section. There you can find some historic books on Houston (and other Texas places also). I've found three books filled with historic photographs. In fact, I managed to snag a 2008 calender of old Houston photographs. It's amazing to look at these photographs and see how much this part of Texas has changed. There is an organization that recognizes the same thing. However they do more than I ever could in preserving history and making people aware of it. The Greater Houston Preservation Alliance has organized some walking tours of Houston. I got my first taste of walking tours in New Orleans and thought it would be great if someone did that over here. Now if I had any entrepreneur sense I would have done something, but I'm not. If you're into ghost tours like I am, perhaps you can check out this group. I would like to take some of these tours myself if I could find the time. My birthday is coming up, perhaps I can tell my wife that's what I'd like to do. Another interesting source of Houston history is a blog on the chronicle's website called Bayou City History.
